This looks great! Just a question: When you lay down the brush strokes, do you already know how they will look? As in, when you draw a mountain, you don't just place them randomly? Because I cna never get my speed painting brush storkes to look like what they are meant to look like :(

Hmm.. tough question dude..
I guess yeah.. i always have an exact picture of what i want in my head before i ever start painting.. Whenever i get a good idea of what to paint in my head, i see it in color, in motion.. i can walk in there.. i see it all in 3D.. and with sound. When you virtually experience the surroundings and the whole feel of the environment you are going to paint - you get a good idea of where all the objects are and their colors.

Occasionally i try to paint with no idea in mind.. but usually those end up in trashcan fairly quickly.

I cant place stuff "randomly" on the painting. - that will kill the composition. You need to understand the basics of composition before you can start to paint something. I didnt take any art courses when i started to paint.. it all just seemed like self-explanatory to me. and i got better bit by bit as i looked at paintings of professionals.

Ah, that may be my problem. I can "see" what I want, but I don't know how to build it up :( I attempted a painting of a city last night, a sort of steampunking city, and I had it in my mind what I wanted to do, but I just didn't know how to execute it or where to start (I used reference too XD). I think it's just... I don't know where and how to form lines and colours that will make up what I want. I've always been used to a smooth cartoony style(here's my old account gallery so you get the idea (lots of fanart there :O): [link]).

I want to break away from that, and fanart... but I don't know where to start :S Do you have any tips? I've found watching speedpainting videos help quite a bit, but with those, you never know "why" they do stuff, just that they "do".

Aww, it's so frustrating having this epic city in my mind and not being able to get it out XD

heh.. yeah.. i know the feeling.. when i just started digital painting, i also wondered many times how the hell people just PLACE stuff without any lineart beneath it.. i drew with lineart at that time.. but then i gradually learned to just use basic photoshop brushes and placing SHAPES and COLORS.. and not lines.. apparently you dont need them at all!! It must be a very difficult transition from semi-cellshaded + lineart style to digital painting style..

I dont have any other advice but to grab some basic photoshop brushes and start painting stuff that you see.. going to life-drawing courses might help. you need to learn to gasp the sence of objects.. their colors.. values... shapes. NOT lines..

Thankyou! This will be really helpful advice, I'm going to work on it now :P Does it help just to sketch it out first though?

yeah.. i guess.. before, i always sketched on paper first. I even sometimes do it nowadays too. But i gradually learned to sketch straight inside photoshop.
The thing here is.. what kind of style you want to achieve. I want my stuff to look like traditional painting, Oils maybe.. so i sorta simulate the style in photoshop too. I paint colors and shapes and then start defining them more accurately and put shadow values on them..
If you are not familiar with traditional painting, it could be somewhat difficult to start painting in this style.

This kinda reminds me of Protoss In StarCraft.. Nice one.. And about "huge" geeling, it could be reached by very tiny details (like windows etc...)
